Kretinga is one of Lithuania’s oldest cities. The first time it is historically documented as being mentioned was in 1253. Kretinga has a diverse history starting in the 13th century. During WWII, it also fell under German occupation, causing some of the city’s historic monuments to be damaged or destroyed. Today, however, the city has been restored to its original glory.

Today the city is thriving and has become a centre for the arts hosting annual folk music festivals, Midsummer Night’s eve celebration, and the popular Kretinga Festival. The town also celebrates Mardi Gras, and hosts a Manorial feast. Car hire at Kretinga is a good way to take in all the sites.
